WinMount can decompress WIM files and also supports mount WIM files as a virtual disk.
There are 4 ways to mount WIM file as a virtual disk with WinMount: 1. Using file association
1) Open WinMount main window, Click the "Option" drop down menu, Select "Options-File
Association", tip WIM to be associated with Mount.
2) Double-click a WIM file, WinMount will mount it to a new virtual disk.
2. Using right-click menu
On WIM right-click drop down menu, click "WinMount3 -> Mount to new drive", WinMount will
mount it to a new virtual disk.
. Mount to new drive : Mount the WIM file to a new virtual drive. . Mount to...: Assign a disk letter for the WIM file. (Refer to "How to assign a disk?" on
the bottom of this page.)
3. Using toolbar
1) Click the button "Mount file" on the toolbar of WinMount main interface;
2) Select a WIM files, click "ok". WinMount will mount it to a new virtual disk.
4. Using drag
Drag a WIM file to WinMount main interface directly, WinMount will mount it to a new
virtual disk.
How to assign a disk?
Of course, you can assign a disk for the WIM file, such as H: or K: or whatever you like.
1) Click the button "Mount to" on the toolbar of WinMount main interface( or right-click
the WIM file and select "Mount to...").
2) Select a WIM file, select a drive, then WinMount would mount the WIM file to the
assigned disk.
You can also input a path for the WIM file. For example, select "H:\" and input "folder\folder1", then the WIM file would be mount to
"H:\folder\folder1".

Generally speaking, Zip or Rar files that we download from Internet needs to be decompressed before we can actually use them. This decompression process goes like this: First, you need to double-click this archive, then an associated decompression tool will open its file list in a window. Now, if you double-click one of the files on the list, it seems that the file is opened automatically, in the fact, all the files on the list have been decompressed to a temp folder in advance before it's opened. This whole decompression process usually takes a lot of time, especially for an age that archives go larger and larger.
For instance, decompressing an archive larger than 1G often takes you 10 minutes or more depending on your computer's capability, but now if you have got WinMount at hand, you don't need to tolerate the boring moment spent on decompressing. Just right-click on the archive, select "Mount to a new drive " menu item, a few seconds later, the operating system will notify you that a new device has been found and a new drive is created and ready to work. If you open it, you can see that all the files inside the archive are ready for your use. It's really different from decompression, because decompression is using temp folder, mounting is using ram cache. If you want to unmount the virtual drive, everything will disappeared from cache. But if you close compression tool, there is still something in the temp folder.
